Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED or higher Must be at least eighteen (18) years old Must pass a DOT drug and alcohol test Must never have been convicted of a DWI Supervises:
None Essential Job Functions:
Assists the bus driver with the safety, movement, management and care of the children boarding the school bus, leaving the bus or being transported Seats self in an area on the bus to ensure observance of all passengers at all times and make sure they are following school bus safety rules Assists the school bus driver in reporting infractions of school bus safety Is aware of problems between students and keeping those students separated by assigning seats When working on a school bus equipped with a wheelchair lift, operates the lift for loading and unloading of wheelchairs and also ensures that that the wheelchair is properly secured on the school bus Is responsible for securing students who ride in child restraint seats, etc.
Attends school bus safety meetings Assists bus driver with pre-trip and post-trip inspections Maintains a high standard of student conduct at all times Assists driver in keeping the bus clean and inspects for damages and repairs on a daily basis Ensures that a child takes his/her belongings with him/her when departing the bus Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor Physical and Cognitive Requirements:
The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below are applicable to the School Bus Monitor job classification within the Transportation Department of Hoke County Schools.
Work in this classification is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must be able to:
Walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, and crouch Work in various inside and outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, job hazards and atmospheric conditions.
Use visual acuity required for depth perception and color perception Visually inspect small defects and/or small parts Observe general surroundings and activities Hear sufficiently to accurately perceive information at normally spoken word levels Understand and follow written and oral instructions Use communication by means of spoken word to express or exchange ideas Safely work in situations of exposure to blood borne pathogens which may require specialized personal protective equipment Maintain order on the bus while children are being transported Assist children on and off the bus at proper stops in a safe, orderly manner Establish good working relationships with the children, parents, bus driver and other staff Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Be physically capable of maneuvering down narrow bus aisle to intervene when a student's safety is at risk
